Overview

This half-day hands-on workshop will feature didactic lectures, demonstrations and small group, comprehensive hands-on training focused on shoulder and ankle. Designed for practicing radiologists, this workshop is structured to simulate real-case reporting while providing an overview of common pathologies, techniques, and protocols for shoulder and ankle ultrasound.

Participants will move through two 90-minute sessions, with a faculty-to-participant ratio of five participants to every faculty, maximizing the opportunity to acquire new skills and techniques. Participants will benefit from individualized instructor feedback, small group discussions, and plenty of time for hands-on practice. Each session will include a brief didactic lecture, scanning demonstrations followed by opportunities for participants to practice on live models and interact with faculty from across the country.

Needs Assessment

A practice gap was identified in musculoskeletal ultrasound due to variation in training and practices, new technology and quality improvement needs.  Physicians, residents, and fellows involved in the care of patients relevant to this topic require updated knowledge and skills related to optimal orientation and characteristics of shoulder and ankle ultrasound to support evidence-informed practice.

This need was identified through planning committee discussion, CSSR Executive, and member feedback. For example, the planning committee reviewed current literature and clinical practice updates and consulted subject matter experts to confirm the relevance of the identified learning needs.

This educational activity has been designed to address these needs through didactic lectures, live demonstrations, and hands-on interactive simulation stations led by expert faculty, with the goal of supporting informed clinical decision-making and high-quality patient care.

This workshop is designed for practicing radiologists involved in protocolling and musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging

Following active participation in this ultrasound simulation workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the relevant musculoskeletal anatomy and biomechanics of shoulder and ankle as visualized on ultrasound. (CanMEDS Roles: Medical Expert)
  • Demonstrate appropriate ultrasound techniques for systematic assessment of the shoulder and ankle examinations. (CanMEDS Roles: Medical Expert)
  • Apply appropriate transducer positioning and scanning techniques to optimize visualization of shoulder and ankle structures. (CanMEDS Roles: Medical Expert)
  • Recognize common sonographic features of ankle and shoulder pathologies to support accurate ultrasound interpretation. (CanMEDS Roles: Medical Expert)

Shoulder

Workshop faculty will provide an overview of image optimization and demonstrate techniques for the orientation and positioning for ultrasound of the shoulder. There will be a didactic lecture to demonstrate normal anatomy followed by imaging of common pathologies. A live demonstration will be performed which will include dynamic assessment of the shoulder. This will be followed by hands-on practice.

Ankle

Workshop faculty will provide an overview of image optimization and demonstrate techniques for the positioning and scanning techniques for ultrasound of the ankle. There will be a didactic lecture to demonstrate normal anatomy followed by imaging of common pathologies. A live demonstration will be performed. This will be followed by hands-on practice.

Accreditation and Designation Statements

This workshop is an Accredited Simulation Activity (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the Canadian Association of Radiologists. The MSK ULTRASOUND ESSENTIALS: SHOULDER AND ANKLE IN PRACTICE is approved for a maximum of 3 hours (9 Section 3 credits)
